ABWAK Symposium 2021
We are very disappointed that we will not be able to bring you our usual 2 day Symposium again in 2021 due to the ongoing COVID restrictions and the uncertainty of what the situation will be over the next few months. I’m sure you can appreciate that our hands are tied, and none of us expected the pandemic to still be having such a hold over our day to day lives.
However, we are going to run our first ever VIRTUAL SYMPOSIUM! We are very excited about this as it’s all very new for ABWAK Council. Fortunately, we have some new council members who have some experience of hosting online events and strong IT backgrounds to be able to deliver this event with confidence.
When will the Symposium take place?
We have decided to run the event over three evenings in March so that it will be available to as many of our members and other zookeepers as possible. No need to ask for time off work or money for expenses to attend this time!
Monday 15th March 18:00 – 21:30
Tuesday 16th March 18:00 – 21:30
Wednesday 17th March 18:00 – 21:30
These dates are fixed but the finish time may be slightly earlier or later depending on the length of the presentations for each evening.
What presentations will be included?
We are aiming to bring you all the presentations that were scheduled for the 2020 Symposium. Plus some facility tours and workshops from the 2020 host venue Chessington. Once we have our programme confirmed we will publish it here.
Each evening will have two sessions of pre-recorded presentations, with a live Q&A after each session featuring those speakers. Following on from this will be as many facility tours and workshops that the Chessington keepers are able to manage on a virtual basis. Each evening will be different content.
How do I book?
Use this page to book your ticket to the Symposium. The ticket covers all three evenings and only costs £10 for ABWAK members and £20 for non-members.
An invite link will be sent to the email that you used to book your ticket, close to the time of the start of the first evening. Each person booking needs to supply their own email address to be able to receive the invite link.
How will the virtual Symposium work?
The Symposium will be hosted on Zoom by ABWAK Council who will show the pre-recorded presentations. You can type in questions about the talks while you watch and these will be submitted to the speakers by ABWAK Council during the live Q&A afterwards. If any of the speakers are unable to attend the live Q&A, we will forward your questions by email and return your answers at a later date.
Anything else I should know?
All those booked on to the Symposium will receive an ABWAK Certificate of Attendance sent electronically in pdf format.
A significant percentage of the profit from this event will go to Wild Tiger Health Centre. It is a personal project of the late John Lewis and supported by Chessington, who would have been our Symposium hosts. This is in place of the money raised by our usual raffle held during the Symposium dinner.
Please direct any other questions to the event organiser shown at the top of the page.
