Hippopotamus Keepers’ Workshop
ABWAK and BIAZA MWG have been working together to bring the first Hippopotamus Keeper Workshop, hosted at Whipsnade Zoo. This workshop is aimed for keepers of both Pygmy Hippopotamus and Common Hippopotamus, or those in a collection who have a direct impact on their husbandry (eg. Nutritionist, Behaviour & Welfare staff), or staff from collections who are prospective keepers of either species.
Content to include:
- Methods of Blood Draw in Pygmy Hippopotamus at London Zoo - Jessica Young (Lead Keeper, Hoofstock, London Zoo) .
- The History of Hippopotamus at ZSL - Connor Corrigan (Lead Keeper, Large Hoofstock, Whipsnade Zoo).
- Body Condition Scoring and the Effects of Contraception on Body Condition in Hippopotamus Species - Lewis Rowden (Evidence Based Animal Care Team Leader, ZSL).
- Measuring and Improving Lighting Provision in Animal Houses, with a focus on Hippopotamus Species - Thomas Griffiths (Owner, Tomaskas Ltd).
- Tour of Whipsnade Zoo Hippopotamus Facility.
- EEP Updates
- Pygmy Hippopotamus Conservation Update

Cost for ABWAK & BIAZA members £25,
Non-members also welcome £45.
Refreshments and lunch are included in the price.
